Terms of Service

What we are
Carbon Karma operates as a merchant of record for carbon offset retirement services. When you make a purchase, Carbon Karma purchases verified carbon credits from a supplier on your behalf and arranges for those credits to be retired in the registry that issued them (Verra, the American Carbon Registry, or the Climate Action Reserve).
You are not buying:
- An investment, security, financial instrument, or commodity
- A physical product
- Ownership of a project, land, or any tangible asset
- A guarantee of any specific environmental outcome beyond credit retirement
You are buying a service: we retire verified carbon credits in the registry on your behalf, and your purchase appears in our public retirement ledger with the registry serial number.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the United States to use Carbon Karma.
Account
You are responsible for keeping your password secure. Notify us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account. You may delete your account at any time from the Profile page.
Project information
Project details (location, type, certification, photos) are sourced primarily from public registry records and verified to the extent reasonably practical. We make best-efforts judgments about category labels (tribal, community, regenerative, etc.); if you find an error, please tell us.
Substitution rights
If a project you select becomes unavailable between checkout and retirement, we will either substitute a comparable project with your consent or refund the affected portion of your purchase. Comparable means: same registry standard, similar category, and a price equal to or below what you paid.
Refunds
You may request a full refund any time before the credits have been retired in the registry on your behalf. Once retirement has occurred (typically within 7–30 days of purchase, sooner in most cases), the transaction is irreversible because the credits have been permanently consumed in the registry.
Pricing
Prices shown at checkout include the wholesale credit cost, registry retirement fees, payment processing, and the Carbon Karma platform fee. We do not charge hidden fees beyond what is shown at checkout.
Environmental claims
Carbon Karma displays your offset progress as a Carbon Karma Score that compares verified retirements to your calculator-basedfootprint estimate. The Carbon Karma calculator covers transportation, home energy, and household waste; it does not currently account for diet, consumption, flights, or other lifestyle factors. Your actual personal footprint may be higher than the figure shown. We make no broader claim that you are "carbon neutral" or "net zero" in any regulatory or scientific sense based on these purchases.
Limitation of liability
Our total liability to you in connection with any purchase will not exceed the amount you paid for that purchase. This is the factual posture today; the binding legal limitation will be specified in the attorney-drafted version of these terms.
User conduct
You agree not to misuse the service, attempt to disrupt it, circumvent rate limits, or use automated tools to scrape data. We may suspend accounts engaged in abuse.
Changes
We will replace this interim Terms of Service with an attorney-drafted version before public launch and will notify registered users by email. After that, we may make changes from time to time and will post the updated date at the top of this page; material changes will trigger an email notification with an opportunity to opt out by deleting your account.
Governing law
These terms are governed by U.S. law. Specific governing-law and dispute-resolution clauses (including any arbitration agreement) will be specified in the attorney-drafted version.
